Weeks 19 & 20 — Good things take time.
Last week, we skipped our weekly stories, and I sincerely apologize. I guess it’s our quarterly reminder that I’m human. I also wanted to share something rich and beneficial, so it’s also a reminder that good things take time.
I watched this video of an interview with Kobe Bryant, and I discovered a few mindsets I already knew and have found useful. I think a lot of people might benefit from some of them. Here are two points that left an impression on me;
- My personal favorite and something he didn’t say explicitly is, ‘that good things take time.’ Between minutes 2:44 and 3:58, he talks about how he found out his legs weren’t strong enough to make him the player he wanted to be and knew he could work on it for a year to get better in the next season. Some days your dreams need that, just showing up every day and working consistently on little pieces that can bring your goals together. Consistency and patience are two themes here. Most of your faves, from musicians to footballers who give you performances that electrify you, probably practice this.
- Asking questions from people who have walked paths before you. I like to think that each of us is unique, but we still stand to gain so much by asking questions to people who have done things we are interested in. For example, Kobe talks about how he asked other basketballers he looks up to about their strategies. In the ‘Becoming a networking genius’ episode of Grad School Buddy, we also share tips about seeking out people to talk to and what to say to such people.
I’m sure there are many more lessons to pick from this video. But these two stuck out to me. Maybe these concepts are boring and not so popular, but they work and might be the gamechanger for you too!
